Lithium-Ion Batteries
The idea of lightening the design of the car in every possible way pursued the designers from the very appearance of the car. And over the past hundred years, the design has almost reached the limit of perfection. But other elements of the car, especially those related to onboard electronics, passive safety, are growing by leaps and bounds.
Lithium-ion batteries relieve the stress of engines in hybrid vehicles and serve as the primary power source in electric models. The lithium battery for the car is gaining more and more popularity. Lightweight lithium batteries are for a variety of vehicles, from motorcycles to military vehicles. Operating temperature, safety, durability, charging time, and power output of lithium-ion batteries.
There are three types of batteries used in electric vehicles. Lead-acid batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries, and lithium-ion power supplies. Of course, this type of battery is used in electric vehicles and rechargeable hybrids. But there the battery capacity will not allow using a less energy-intensive type of storage, and besides. A dead battery is often present to power auxiliary systems. As the main source of power, lithium batteries are not used anywhere else.
Why are lithium-ion batteries so good and what are the premiums? A lot of time has passed since the successful idea of using lithium cobaltite as a cathode in a battery appeared in 1983. During which the technology has been continuously improved.
Advantages of the technology
The main advantages of the technology lie precisely in the very high energy intensity and charge/discharge rate. Additional advantages are low self-discharge values, high energy density, small-size batteries, and a complete lack of maintenance throughout the life cycle.
Why you need a lithium-ion battery in your car is understandable: to reduce weight. So, a typical battery in a 60 Ah car weighs about 16 kg, and a 90 Ah battery already weighs 24 kg. The mass of a lithium-ion would be about 3-5 kg for models with the same capacity and voltage. And the difference of 12–20 kg is already significant. In any case, for the sake of 5-10 kg, manufacturers are modernizing engines, lightning cylinder blocks, and crankshafts, using plastic crankcases and aluminum bolts.
So the advantages of lithium-ion are:
- lithium batteries are lighter than lead-acid
- keep a charge longer;
- withstand more charge/discharge cycles;
- the volume of lithium-ion batteries is higher than lead-acid;
- higher output of higher voltage;
- they have no “memory effect”;
- stored longer under the right conditions;
- age slower – life cycle is about 10 years.
Why not use a lithium-ion battery for your car? This is a modern type of battery, they are compact, lightweight, and durable enough.
A lithium-ion battery for a car has many positive characteristics. But its use in gasoline and diesel engines is not effective. A generator that generates an alternating current in a car is not designed to charge this type of battery.
